Velikaya Novosyolka has Fallen

Few days ago Ukraine sources denied that Russian forces encircled part of Ukraine’s 110 brigade in southern part of the town separated with river. Yesterday reliable sources confirmed that Russian forces fully control the town and included geolocation of three Russian brigade soldiers rising flags on edges of the town. Liveuamap also showing Russian forces full control of the area only few miles of Dnipro region borders.

Russian Army group Vostok now can move to the north in the direction of the of Komar and Bogatyr, as flank of group Center  advancing on Pokrovsk and west of Kurakhovo, where since capturing Kurakhovo fighting continue for Dachnoe and or to the west in the direction of Zaporozhye, going into the rear of the Ukrainian Forces fortified positions not prepared for attack from the back.

Following the retreat of Ukrainian forces from Velikaya Novosyolka, Zelensky replaced  the commander of the Khortytsia group Brigadier-General Andriy Hnatov  who was given a role overseeing training and communications.

The newly appointed Khortytsia group commander, Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi, is well respected in the army, where he is credited with stopping a Russian offensive in the northeastern Kharkiv region last year, but failed to dislodge the Russian forces from northern part of Volchansk.

Velikaya Novosyolka on the Brink: Ukrainian Forces Face Critical Stand-off as Russian Control Tightens

The ongoing battle for Velikaya Novosyolka has reached a perilous stage as Russian troops have established full control over the town’s center, pushing further into the northern part and completely cutting off about 1,500 soldiers of Ukraine’s 110th Brigade in the southern part without any possibility of retreat. The Mokri Yaly, Vovca and Shaitanka Rivers now serves as a formidable barrier to Ukrainian forces, complicating efforts to supply troops and evacuate wounded soldiers. The absence of bridges has exacerbated the logistical nightmare, leaving the Ukrainian troops stranded and vulnerable.

Strategically located near Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Velikaya Novosyolka holds significant importance in the broader context of the Donbas conflict. Control of the town not only affects troop movements but also impacts supply lines and regional dominance. Military analysts are scrutinizing the Ukrainian command’s decision to concentrate defensive efforts between three rivers without accounting for the potential consequences of destroyed infrastructure.

As Russian forces consolidate their gains, the pressure mounts on the Ukrainian troops in the southern part of the town. Reports indicate that morale is plummeting among the encircled soldiers, who are now faced with the grim reality of only one possibility: to break through to the northern bank of the Shaitanka River. This break through could lead to significant casualties as the area is under full Russian fire and drone control.

The Ukrainian forces are now in a desperate situation, with their supply lines severed and their ability to maneuver severely limited. The lack of bridges over the Shaitanka River means that any attempt to reinforce or resupply the encircled troops would be extremely difficult and dangerous. The Ukrainian command is likely weighing its options, considering whether to attempt a risky breakout operation or to hold their ground and hope for a counteroffensive or external intervention.

The situation in Velikaya Novosyolka is a stark reminder of the brutal realities of modern warfare, where strategic decisions can have dire consequences for the troops on the ground. The international community is closely watching the developments in this critical area, as the outcome could have significant implications for the broader conflict in the Donbas region.

How might the Ukrainian 110 Brigade’s defeat impact the morale and effectiveness of other Ukrainian forces?

The defeat of the Ukrainian 110th Brigade in Velikaya Novosyolka could have a significant impact on the morale and effectiveness of other Ukrainian forces in the Donbas region. Here are some potential effects:

  1. Decline in Morale: The encirclement and potential loss of the 110th Brigade could lead to further decline in morale among other Ukrainian units. The perception that a well-defended position can be cut off and isolated may create a sense of vulnerability and uncertainty among the troops. This can affect their willingness to fight and their overall combat effectiveness.
  2. Fear of Encirclment: Other units may become more cautious and hesitant to engage in offensive operations, fearing that they could be similarly isolated and cut off by Russian forces. This fear can lead to a more defensive posture, limiting the Ukrainian military’s ability to conduct aggressive operations and seize the initiative.
  3. Resource Strain: The need to divert resources and reinforcements to attempt to relieve the encircled brigade could strain other units. This could lead to shortages of supplies, ammunition, and personnel in other areas, weakening the overall defense and making other units more vulnerable to Russian attacks.
  4. Psychological Impact: The psychological impact of seeing fellow soldiers encircled and potentially facing heavy casualties can be profound. This can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and a sense of helplessness among the troops, further affecting their performance and cohesion.
  5. Loss of Confidence in Leadership: If the Ukrainian command is perceived as unable to effectively support and protect encircled units, it could lead to a loss of confidence in leadership. This can undermine the chain of command and make it more difficult to coordinate and execute military operations.
  6. Impact on Civilian Morale: The situation can also affect the morale of the civilian population in the Donbas region. The perception that Ukrainian forces are unable to protect their own troops and are losing ground can lead to a sense of insecurity and fear among civilians, potentially leading to displacement and a loss of support for the Ukrainian government.
  7. Need for Psychological Support: The Ukrainian military may need to provide additional psychological support and counseling to other units to help them cope with the stress and anxiety caused by the isolation of the 110th Brigade. This can help maintain morale and ensure that other units remain effective in their missions.
