Three major Russian military groups or one group
The battle for Kurakhovo has escalated following the swift capture of Selidovo. Russian forces are now attempting to encircle Ukrainian troops in the Kurakhovsky area. Three major Russian military groups are involved in this significant offensive: the “Vostok” group is operating in the Shakhtyorskoye-Bogoyavlenka zone, while the “Yug” group is positioned in the Bogoyavlenka-Kurakhovo area, and the “Center” group is active in the Kurakhovo-Gornyak zone.
This level of military coordination and scale Russian army has not conducted since World War II.
Russian Forces Advance Toward Kurakhove Reservoir
Russian military operations are intensifying as forces prepare to advance from the north towards the Kurakhove Reservoir. This strategic move threatens to push all Ukrainian troops west of the reservoir, impacting their operations in the southern Donbas region.
Kurakhove serves as a vital transport hub for Ukrainian forces, making its defense essential. Currently, Russian troops have reached the eastern outskirts of the city. However, a direct assault on Kurakhove seems unlikely at this stage. Instead, Russian forces are expected to encircle the city from the north, along the western edge of the reservoir, as well as from the east and south.
Reliable pro Russian sources reporting that Russian forces have made significant progress in an urban region, taking control of the first microdistrict near the railway track including streets East and St. The Embankment and advancing to Zheleznodorozhnaya and Cossack streets, as well as Zaporozhye Avenue.
Ukraine sources did not confirmed Russian presence in Kurakhovo, but stated that situation is difficult.
Strategic Importance of Kurakhove in Ukraine’s Defense
As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the town of Kurakhove has emerged as a focal point for military strategy in the southern Donbas region. Losing control of Kurakhove could significantly weaken Ukraine’s defense capabilities, impacting areas from Velyka Novosilka to Selydove.
Kurakhove serves as a critical hub for Ukrainian forces, providing a strategic position to monitor and respond to enemy movements. Its loss would not only diminish the defensive line but also open up pathways for further Russian advances towards Dnipro river.
Military analysts emphasize the need for reinforced support in Kurakhove to prevent a potential collapse of defenses in southern Donbas. The fall of Kurakhove could be the end for Ukraine’s defense in southern Donbas.
Ukrainian Servicemen Desertion Raises Concerns
Recent reports indicate that over 100,000 Ukrainian servicemen have deserted from the armed forces or voluntarily left their units. This alarming figure was disclosed by Ukrainian Member of Parliament Anna Skorokhod, who pointed to low morale and poor management as key factors driving this trend.
The ongoing conflict has taken a toll on the soldiers, many of whom face challenging conditions and a lack of support. Skorokhod emphasized the need for better leadership and resources to address the issues affecting troop morale.
As the situation unfolds, the Ukrainian government may need to reassess its strategies to retain personnel and ensure the effectiveness of its military forces. The desertion of such a significant number of servicemen raises questions about the future of Ukraine’s defense capabilities and the impact on the ongoing conflict.
